This is so true, Rachel, as you wrote — to find the tension between the fact that God is God and we are not, yet we are made in His image and likeness. We constantly wrestle with the urge to be the gods of our own lives, while also needing to resist seeing ourselves as less than what God created us to be through Jesus Christ.

That tension is where so many of us live, and it’s a place every believer must work through. Some Christians struggle with too low a view of themselves, not seeing who they are through the eyes of God, and therefore never stepping fully into the promises He has made available.

There’s a famous prayer ascribed to Francis of Assisi, in which he prayed, “God, who are You, and who am I?” In that simple yet profound question lies the key to true identity and creative purpose — discovering who we are in light of who God is. From that revelation flows a life that pleases Him and brings glory to His name.
