What Does it Mean to be Wesleyan?

This course focuses on the distinctives of what it means to be “a Wesleyan”. Amid the many Christian traditions, denominations, and theological perspectives, what makes the Wesleyan movement identifiably unique? This course introduces us to John Wesley’s view of grace and salvation, and it familiarizes us with the “Wesleyan Quadrilateral.” It also addresses the tension of striving for unity within theological diversity while maintaining fidelity to the truth. Finally, it discusses the relationship between pursuing innovation while remaining grounded in tradition. 

Inductive Bible Study (True^North)

A study of assuptions, procedures, and guidelines to be used in interpreting the Bible. Emphasis is upon refinement of the student's skills in (1) prayer, (2) observation, (3) interpretation and (4) application. The course is designed to develop the student's ability to study the Scriptures accurately, systematically, and independently as a basis for all further personal and professional use of the Bible.

Introduction to Theology

This course provides a systematic overview of the major themes of Christian theology, including ethics. You will explore topics like the nature of God, human nature and sin, Christ and salvation, the Holy Spirit and the Church, the sacraments, Christian ethics, and eschatology. Through reflection on these core topics of Christian faith, you will deepen your understanding of theology and its application to contemporary Christian life, while ideally experiencing spiritual growth in the process.

New Testament Survey

This course covers the literature of the New Testament. Special attention will be given to the life of Christ and the history of the early church, including the life of Paul.

Theology of Holiness

This course will provide the student with a better intellectual understanding of the Wesleyan doctrine of holiness for their own benefit and for those they minister among. It is the hope that as students gain in understanding, God will continue to work in them by drawing them closer to righteousness in Christ, setting them apart in sanctification, and equipping them for more powerful Christian service.

Wesleyan Church History and Discipline

The course will examine the theological and historical events and people who helped shape the development of The Wesleyan Church from its roots in early Methodism to the present. Emphasis will focus on identifying the key distinctive values of the Church in its beginning stages and how these values continue to shape the message and mission of the Church today. The course will also provide an opportunity to gain a working knowledge of the Wesleyan Discipline as a helpful tool for church governance and administration.
