Lesson 3 Reflection Activities

Completion requirements

Not everyone who works for us, follows us. Not everyone who obeys us, follows us. Following comes from a response to the shepherd's voice: Hearing it, Knowing it, and then Following it.

When it comes to people knowing our voice, it has a lot to do with how trustworthy we are.

A shepherd’s authority increases as people come to trust their voice. The components that build trust are the shepherd’s Agenda, Character, and Commitment.

  1. Reflect on your agenda with regard to a recent conflict resolution that you have lived through. How clearly were you able to articulate your agenda to the people you were resolving the conflict with? Were there some things that you said or did that were detrimental to sharing your agenda? What could you have said or done that would have built up an understanding of your agenda more clearly?
  2. Reflect on your character with regard to that same conflict resolution. Was the conflict about a particular mistake or problem, or was it with regard to a judgment against someone’s character? If it started out as addressing a particular problem, did it ever touch on anyone’s character as the conflict resolution progressed? What are some particular things that you could have said or done that could have improved the other person’s/people’s understanding of your character?

  3. Reflect on your commitment with regard to the people in that same conflict resolution. Has your own personal commitment level to them and to the organization changed as a result of this conflict? Has the person's/people’s commitment to you and to the organization changed as a result of this conflict? What are some things that you could have said or done to improve the people’s understanding of your commitment in the midst of this resolution?
