It was once said that if you want to know how you would have behaved during a particular controversy of the past, you are probably doing it now. A key part of this course is a personal journey toward self-awareness. Am I truly living up to my biblical and professed values on these issues? Am I being manipulated or misled by the voices in my world? Are my professed values my real values?
When we look back at concerns over Irish immigration, Italian immigration, or Polish immigration, are my current attitudes toward immigrants the same or different from those in the 1800s and 1900s? Are my attitudes toward immigrants from Latin America or the Middle East today similar to the way nativists viewed (and feared) these earlier influxes?
Pray the prayer, “Search me, O God, and know my heart… see if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” Pray about taking additional steps to learn more about the history of immigration and the difficulties of the current situation for immigrants.
