Discussion: People's Mistaken Impression of the Servant

Completion requirements

53:3

He was despised and rejected by mankind,

a man of suffering, and familiar with pain.

Like one from whom people hide their faces

he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.

53:4

Surely he took up our pain

and bore our suffering,

yet we considered him punished by God,

stricken by him, and afflicted.

Initial Post

Read what people said about Jesus while he was hanging on the cross in Matthew 27:39-44, Mark 15:29-32, and Luke 23:35-37. In the discussion forum below, respond to the following:

  • What does Isaiah's prophecy tell us about what these people were thinking when they said those things?

Follow-up Post

Read Matthew 8:1-17 where Matthew quotes from Isaiah 53:4. Read through the other posts by your peers, then respond to your original post answering the following:

  • According to Matthew, what part of Jesus's ministry was Isaiah referring to when he said, "Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering"?
  • In light of that, what should the Jews have been thinking when they saw Jesus hanging on the cross?
