Completion requirements

In Lesson 1, we reflected on a past challenging conversation, but here we are focused on equipping ourselves with a tool for the future. Let’s look at the important, but distinct, purposes in your journey to mastering the art of navigating challenging conversations.

Objective

Gain initial self-awareness and set expectations for the course.

Provide an ongoing tool for self-assessment and improvement.

Focus

Looks at one specific past experience and identifies what made it challenging.

Encourages ongoing, regular reflections on multiple conversations.

Outcome

A single reflection piece that serves as a basis for learning and sets expectations for the course.

Multiple journal entries that can be reviewed for patterns, growth, and areas needing improvement.

Scope

Past-oriented; serves as a pre-assessment to determine where the learner is starting from.

Future-oriented; serves as a post-assessment to see how the learner has applied course concepts in real-life situations.

Spiritual Reflection

Not included.

Includes a space to reflect on how spiritual teachings influenced or could influence the conversation.

Instructions

  1. Download the Reflection Journal Template: Click the download link to get your copy of the Reflection Journal template. This template is designed to guide your reflections effectively.
  2. Engage in Challenging Conversations: Over the course of a week, engage in at least two challenging conversations. These could be scheduled discussions or spontaneous ones that arise.
  3. Record Your Observations: After each conversation, fill out the Reflection Journal template. Take your time to think about each question and answer as honestly as you can.
  4. Review and Reflect: At the end of the week, review your journal entries. Look for patterns, insights, and areas where you could improve.

Review and Summary

Once you've filled out the journal for at least two challenging conversations, go back and review your entries. Look for areas of growth, recurring challenges, and note any strategies that were particularly effective or ineffective. This reflection will help you become more adept at navigating challenging conversations in the future.
